This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger

This Tender Land by William Kent Krueger is a must read for lovers of historical fiction and any reader who at times feels like all the great books have already been written.

Taking place during the 1930’s and the Great Depression, the story follows a 12 year old boy named Odie and his band of young “vagabonds” as they escape from a school where there is abuse and cruelty (kind of Huckleberry Fin vibes.)

Traveling by canoe on the Gilead River of Minnesota and hoping to connect to the Mississippi and finally St. Louis, we accompany these four unique yet beautifully intertwined characters as they face danger, heartbreak, and eventually hope, on their way to discovering the meaning of home.
