Sufganiyot (Jelly Donuts)

Happy Hanukkah Friends! In honor of the first day of this beautiful holiday, we embarked on a (semi-complicated but totally worth it) adventure to create sufganiyot AKA Jelly Donuts!

Donuts are completely out of my cooking/baking realm, so I had to turn to the internet for this one.

I used a recipe from Gemma’s Bigger Bolder Baking Blog, and I have to say, it was a 10/10! The directions were so clear, and our donuts turned out light, airy, and with the right amount of sweetness.

Although we normally like to use our own original recipes and put our own spin on things, we decided to completely honor the jelly donuts and turn to an expert, so THANK YOU, GEMMA! Here is a link to the recipe.

If you decide to give these a try, and I highly recommend you do, here are some of our own tips:

  • Start early! These babies need to rise; Once, after you make the dough, and a second time after you have cut out the donuts. So plan in advance!
  • A thermometer helps, buttttt isn’t necessary! Ours was dropped and broke before we really got a chance to use it. So don’t fret if you don’t have one! Just keep a close eye on the donuts.
  • Use a straw for filling the donuts. We went back and forth, on how to fill our donuts… we ended up sticking a straw through the side to make a nice hole, and then used a pastry bag to fill the hole with jelly
