The Sanders Hot Fudge Cream Puff

One of the first moments that marked Annie and Susan’s blossoming friendship in Finding Mrs. Ford, was when the girls went to Sanders, an ice cream shop famous for its Hot Fudge Cream Puff. In the book the cream puff is described as, “one single cream puff, filled with an enormous scoop of vanilla ice cream, all of it slathered in hot fudge. It was large enough to share but Annie and Susan each ordered her own.”

The cream puff is mentioned in the first 25 pages of the book – but the second I read about it, I just KNEW we had to recreate. This is how we did it:


  • 1 sheet of frozen puff pastry
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sugar, plus 1 Tbs
  • 1 Tbs water
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 stick salted butter
  • Vanilla ice cream


  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees (or whatever is specified on the back of the puff pastry box)
  • Allow the puff pastry to thaw; once at room temperature, place the sheet on a floured surface and use a large brimmed glass to cut out 4 circles
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tbs of water; use a brush to coat the tops of each pastry circle and sprinkle on a tbs of sugar
  • Bake the pastries for 15 minutes or until golden brown
  • Once the pastries have been baked and cooled; cut a small bit off the top to make room for the ice cream
  • To make the hot fudge; combine the 1 cup of sugar, with the 1 cup of heavy cream,1 stick of butter, and 1 cup of cocoa; simmer over medium heat and stir until well combined
  • Fill each pastry with the vanilla ice cream, and slather with hot fudge
  • TIP: Extra hot fudge can be stored in a mason jar in the fridge!
