Bourbon Slush


As The Giver of Stars by JoJo Moyes takes place in Kentucky (and there is not a TON of eligible food references throughout the story) we decided to take our inspiration from the state itself, which is known for Bourbon. It’s also known for fried chicken. But we wanted to make something with Bourbon.

This “Bourbon Slush” comes from my Mother’s Kentucky Derby Cook Book. I asked her how she acquired the book and she said that my Father gave it to her after a business trip… I do not remember him ever doing business in Kentucky though, so I am not positive on the accuracy of this story. Like why would he have a business trip in Kentucky?

Anyway this is a super fun cocktail to serve guests, whether it is for a Kentucky Derby Party or just a hot summer day! It IS boozy, but the combination of sweet lemonade and OJ balances it out well… we suggest serving with a fresh sprig of mint, but we also love the idea of topping it off with some sliced pineapple or cherries!


  • 2 cups of tea (we used Constant Comment)
  • 1 can of 12 oz. frozen lemonade, thawed
  • 1 can of 6 oz. frozen OJ
  • 2 cups Bourbon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 cups water


  • Brew the tea, and let it cool completely
  • Mix all ingredients together and then freeze in a plastic container. When ready to serve, scoop into a glass and garnish with a sprig of mint!
