If there is one thing I can say about Sarah Langan’s novel, Good Neighbors, it’s that it does a good job of keeping you hooked in way of keeping you disturbed. Seriously, the whole time I kept saying to myself… wtf?
That being said, I couldn’t put it down! It’s like when people talk about not being able to look away from an accident. I just had to keep going.
The plot is a little Science Fictiony. It’s about this neighborhood in Long Island called Maple Street that seems pretty perfect from the outside, but is actually quite sinister. Things come to a head when a sinkhole appears in a nearby park and a child falls down it and goes missing.
Author Sarah Langan is quite creative, and I think it would be so interesting to hear her inspiration for this story which takes place in 2027. I say that because according to Sarah Langan’s bio, she has an MS in environmental toxicology and her book is all about sinkholes and the earth rotting and this oil thing called bitumen (I had to look it up, it’s similar to asphalt) getting everywhere… my POINT being, what does SARAH LANGAN KNOW THAT WE DON’T.
Imagine if Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse collided, and were written by a scientist. That is this book!
